» Emerging from the legacy Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholars Program, the National Clinician Scholars Program (NCSP) is a two-year research training fellowship educating nurses and physicians to serve as leaders, researchers, and agents of change in health care, community health, and public policy. This interprofessional training allows Scholars to engage in team-based approaches and learn to innovate together to help shape the future of health and health care.
Externships
Externships offer nursing students the opportunity to gain practical experience prior to graduation. Though you may find it challenging to find an externship opportunity locally, consider a summer externship outside of the region — it is well worth it. As there are a limited number of externships, they are competitive, and the application process for many begins early. Start your search in the fall, as some have deadlines as early as November.

Nurse Residencies
Nurse Residency programs provide newly licensed nurses with structured support as they transition from student to professional practice. These programs combine clinical immersion, mentorship, and professional development to build confidence, competence, and retention during the first year of practice. While many Nurse Residency programs are highly competitive and offered at limited institutions, they are well worth pursuing—even if that means expanding your search beyond your immediate region. Application timelines vary by health system, with some programs opening several months before graduation. Students are strongly encouraged to begin researching Nurse Residency opportunities early in their final year to stay informed about deadlines and requirements.
