Nurse Practitioners — “At the Heart of Health Care”

November 12, 2024

Rutgers School of Nursing’s dynamic faculty includes nurse practitioners certified in a range of specialties. Nurse-midwifery and other advanced practice nursing specialties are also represented on the faculty.

For more than 50 years, Nurse practitioners (NPs) have been providing primary, acute, and specialty health care to millions of patients across the lifespan. NPs evaluate patients, order and interpret tests, make diagnoses, write prescriptions, and bring a comprehensive perspective to health care in nearly 1 billion patient visits each year.

NP Week 2024, November 10-16, recognizes the more than 385,000 NPs in the nation. By offering high-quality, cost-effective, patient-centered health care, NPs provide more than 385,000 solutions to the primary care shortage facing America today. “NPs at the Heart of Healthcare,” is this year’s theme established by the American Association of Nurse Practitioners.

“Nurse practitioners merit recognition during NP Week, and each and every day for their contributions to improving health and well-being across populations,” said Angela Starkweather (PhD, ACNP-BC, FAANP, FAAN), dean and professor at Rutgers University School of Nursing.

One of the nation’s largest, most comprehensive nursing programs, Rutgers School of Nursing is a leader in educating future nurse practitioners. Its doctor of nursing practice program, nationally ranked No. 5 by U.S. News & World Report, includes nine NP specialty tracks; post-master’s certificates are available in six specialties.

“I’m so proud of the work our school is doing to expand the pipeline of nurse practitioners prepared to meet the demands of our increasingly complex health care system,” said Starkweather. “Thank you to our phenomenal nurse practitioner faculty, students, and alumni for their dedication to making a difference,” said Starkweather.

Nurse Practitioner Specialty Tracks at Rutgers School of Nursing

Rutgers School of Nursing offers nine post-bachelor’s specialty tracks leading to a doctor of nursing practice degree. Most of the specialties are also available as post-master’s certificate tracks for nurses who already have master’s degrees in nursing.

Nurse Practitioner is No. 1 Best Job Says U.S. News

U.S. News places the nurse practitioner role at No. 1 in its 100 Best Jobs and its Best Health Care Jobs rankings. NPs work in clinics, hospitals, emergency rooms, urgent care centers, nursing homes, and private practices. As clinicians who blend clinical expertise with an added emphasis on health management, NPs bring a comprehensive perspective to health care and continually rise to meet our nation’s health care challenges.
