Stanley S. Bergen Medal of Excellence

Deadline: All information and documentation must be submitted via RUSON Wufoo by February 28, 2023.

The prestigious Stanley S. Bergen Medal of Excellence is awarded under the following criteria: “In his honor, the Board of Trustees annually recognizes one individual from each school whose activities inside and out of the classroom embrace Dr. Bergen’s vision to improve the health and quality of life of all of New Jersey’s citizens.”  

Eligibility:

  • Nominee must be a SON graduate student (MSN, Post-Master’s Certificate, DNP or PhD), with a graduation date between June of the previous year and May of the current year.
  • Minimum GPA of 3.5

Award Criteria

  • Student activities inside and out of the classroom are directed at improving the health and quality of life of all NJ citizens.
  • Cited student activities MUST have occurred while a graduate student at RU SON.
  • The award recipient will speak at SON Convocation.

Nomination Process

Any Rutgers SON faculty member may submit a nomination.

Supporting Documentation (must be submitted by deadline)

  • A nominating letter from a SON faculty focused on outstanding performance in at least 2 of the 4 Areas of Excellence (2 pages maximum):
  • Leadership / Professional Involvement
  • Scholarly Activities
  • Community Service
  • Service to the University
  • Two additional letters of support focused on one area of Excellence (1 page maximum).
  • Curriculum Vitae or Resume
  • GPA / Transcript

Areas of Excellence

  • Leadership / Professional Involvement:  Examples may include areas of elected positions inside and outside of SON, leadership in group activities / projects or instructional activities, including activities at nursing practice sites.  Professional activities may include membership and attendance at professional meetings, or involvement in professional committees or initiatives. 
  • Scholarly Activities:  Examples may include participation in research or clinical projects, reports, presentations, papers or organized research symposiums.
  • Community Service: Examples may include volunteer or community service in global, national, state or local activities.
  • Service to the University: Examples may include participation on University, RBHS or SON committees or task forces or other related activities. 

PLEASE NOTE:  Cited activities MUST have occurred while a graduate student at RU SON and must demonstrate direct or indirect impact on the health/quality of life of NJ’s citizens.

Selection

The Faculty Recognition and Awards Committee will evaluate the nominees’ Supporting Materials and recommend an award recipient to Student Affairs.
