New Jersey Health Foundation Excellence in Teaching Award

Nomination Guidelines:

Deadline: All information and documentation must be submitted by February 27, 2024. 

The New Jersey Health Foundation will present its annual Excellence in Teaching Awards (EIT) for faculty within Rutgers Health. One EIT award is available for each Rutgers Health school. Faculty awardees will receive a custom-designed, framed certificate and a $2,500 stipend to be presented in the spring. The School of Nursing invites nominations for SON faculty to be considered for this award.

The NJHF call for nominations states that “awards will be made solely to reward teaching excellence”.  Therefore, that will be at the core of application review.

Eligibility

  • Nominees must be in at least their 3rd year of service to the School of Nursing
  • Recipients of this award in the previous year are ineligible (The 2023 recipient was Dr. Peijia Zha).

Award Criteria

  • Evidence of teaching effectiveness: this may be demonstrated in student evaluations and letters of support.
  • Any additional evidence that illuminates nominee’s contributions, achievements and/ creativity/innovation as a teacher.  Evidence should be apparent in the nominees’ impact statement, letters of support or additional relevant documents. Examples may include:
    • Exceptional DNP Project Mentorship
    • Curriculum redesign or expansion
    • Outstanding ability to break down and deliver complex ideas in an understandable manner
    • Integration of innovation into the learning environment
    • Exceptional performance in any of the NLN Core Competencies for Academic Nurse Educators:
  • Facilitate Learning
    • Facilitate Learner Development and Socialization
    • Use Assessment and Evaluation Strategies
    • Participate in Curriculum Design and Evaluation of Program Outcomes
    • Function as a Change Agent and Leader
    • Pursue Continuous Quality Improvement in the Nurse Educator Role
    • Engage in Scholarship
    • Function within the Educational Environment

Nomination Process

  1. Initial Nomination:
    Any Rutgers faculty member, staff member, student or alumnus may submit a nomination. Self-nominations are welcome. The nomination itself requires just the name/email of the nominee. Submit a Nomination Form here.
  2. Nominee Notification/Request for Additional Documentation:
    Upon nomination, the nominee receives automatic email notification of the nomination and a website link to submit required additional information online. The nominee is responsible for ensuring that all materials are uploaded by the deadline.
  3. All Materials (from Nominator and Nominee) must be Submitted by February 27, 2024 @ 11:59 pm.
    Following the deadline for uploaded nominations/documents, the Faculty Recognition and Awards Committee will review packets for completeness and give the nominee 24 hours to complete the packet if necessary.
  4. Required documentation:
    • Curriculum Vitae
    • Teaching Effectiveness Ratingsfrom student evaluations within the past 12 months.  The entire evaluation summary should be included, (course name(s)/enrollment(s), quantitative ratings and student comments).
    • Letters of Support (2) that emphasize the nominee’s teaching effectiveness (see award criteria above).  Letters are limited to 2 pages.
      • One letter may be from the nominator OR the nominee if they self-nominate.  
      • Letters of support may be from anyone with direct knowledge of the nominee’s teaching effectiveness, including:
        • Faculty (RU, SON or other) or representatives of continuing education, professional or community service organizations for which the nominee has provided educational activities
        • Students, including RUSON undergraduate or graduate students and participants of continuing education or other educational sessions provided by the nominee
      • Letters may be from an individual or group
      • Nominee’s Impact Statement (500 words maximum)

Selection

The Faculty Recognition and Awards Committee will evaluate the nominees’ uploaded materials and recommend an award recipient to the Dean. The Committee may also decline to recommend a winner for the award.
