A board-certified Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, Dr. Nicole Cerussi (she/hers) is Clinical Assistant Professor, Division of Advanced Nursing Practice and practicing clinician. She began her academic career at Bergen Community College followed by New York University teaching students from various program types ranging from associates to accelerated baccalaureate degree programs. She most recently was in clinical track position as an Associate Professor in the graduate department at Pace University where she was instrumental in developing and teaching an inaugural on-line Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Program.
Dr. Cerussi attained her Master of Science and Doctor of Nursing Practice degrees from New York University during which time she received numerous awards. She was a two-time winner of the Distinguished Student in Psychiatry award and was named Valedictorian during her Master and Doctoral degree programs. Dr. Cerussi also received The Claire and Samuel Fagan Scholarship Award for Psychiatric Nursing and earned the distinction of Jonas Scholar for Psychiatric Mental Health. She completed a fellowship in the Substance Abuse Research Education and Training (SARET) program and Nurse Faculty Fellowship during her masters and doctoral training, respectively. She embodies a student-centered approach to teaching and enjoys being a mentor for current and former students.
Complimenting her academic expertise, Dr. Cerussi has worked as a psychiatric mental health nurse in various diverse settings such as inpatient psychiatry for children and adults, residential treatment, foster care, visiting nurse services for children and adults with HIV and developmental delays, and as an APN outpatient child and adolescent psychiatry, the shelter system in New York City, college mental health, and intensive outpatient rehabilitation for adolescents and adults with co-morbid psychiatric and substance use disorders. Currently, she provides collaborative, individualized, holistic care from a shared decision-making perspective as a psychiatric provider at private practice in New York City. She is certified across the lifespan and received specialized clinical training in child and adolescent psychiatry and addiction medicine including authorization to prescribe buprenorphine.
Dr. Cerussi’s clinical and scholarship interests surround fighting stigma associated with mental illness and substance use disorders and efforts to control and combat the current opioid epidemic.
