Rutgers School of Nursing prepares students for professional licensure in the state of New Jersey and fulfills the requirements of most other US states. Licensure requires the successful completion of a degree and passing the NCLEX exam. The application process requires — depending on the state — submission of an application form, passport style photos, birth certificate or U.S. passport, name change documents (if applicable), immigration documents (if applicable), and a criminal history background check.
New Jersey is one of 43 states/jurisdictions that are members of the Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC). The NLC is an agreement between states that allows nurses to hold one state nursing license, which grants them the right to practice in other states that are part of the agreement.
