Requirements

Advanced registration and payment is required to secure a place in the Surge into the Future as an Operating Room Nurse Course. All requirements are due after registration and prior to the start of the course.

  1. Current, active, New Jersey registered nurse license
  2. Individual professional liability insurance
  3. Current American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS certification
  4. Background check – via Castle Branch
  5. Drug screen – via Castle Branch
  6. Physical examination (Download Physical Form)
  7. Copy of Health Insurance Card
  8. Required immunizations – View Immunization Record Form

    *Note: Nurses from other States are required to have a valid New Jersey license in order to participate in clinical practice.

Description

A ten-week immersion course for nurses who would like to work in an Operating Room.  Participants will spend time learning how to provide high quality, patient centered care through classroom, simulation, and operating room experiences.

Goals of the course include:

  1. Comprehensive classroom instruction including non-technical skills, team coordination, communication and critical thinking. 
  2. Students will learn how to integrate into the main operating rooms with basic skills and training, and the support of trained preceptors and hospital educators.
  3. Simulation scenarios are incorporated throughout the course to integrate classroom discussion, and skills into the OR setting. 

Students will receive AORN Periop 101 modules.

Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Enhance knowledge, skills, and confidence in perioperative practice.
  2. Cultivate a team environment for perioperative excellence.
  3. Boost evidence-based patient safety.
  4. Assist your facility in becoming a facility of choice in your area.
  5. Facilitate training of surgical nurses to provide high quality, patient centered care.
  6. Increase nurse satisfaction with immersion into the operating room teams.
  7. Demonstrate correct techniques in performing nursing skills related to the care of patients in the OR.
  8. Analyze the steps of the nursing process related to providing care in the perioperative setting.
