National Nurse Practitioner Week, 2017 Spotlight: Dr. Mary DiGiulio, Adult-Gerontological Nurse Practitioner

November 15, 2017

Rutgers School of Nursing is proud to salute our nation’s 234,000 nurse practitioners. We’re shining the spotlight on Dr. Mary DiGiulio, DNP, APN, FAANP, inducted earlier this year as a Fellow of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP).

During National Nurse Practitioner Week, November 12-17, 2017, Rutgers School of Nursing is proud to salute Assistant Professor Mary DiGiulio, DNP, APN, FAANP. This outstanding educator and clinician was inducted earlier this year as a Fellow of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP).

DiGiulio was one of 67 new fellows recognized during the 2017 AANP National Conference, held June 20 – 25 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, Philadelphia, PA.  FAANP members are nurse practitioner leaders recognized for their contributions to clinical practice, research, education, or policy to enhance the Association’s mission. The FAANP distinction is held by only 696 of the nation’s 234,000 nurse practitioners; DiGiulio is one of 14 FAANPs residing in the state of New Jersey.

A nationally certified adult and gerontological nurse practitioner, DiGiulio played a key role in establishing the Rutgers Community Health Center (RCHC), a federally qualified health center operated in Newark, NJ by Rutgers School of Nursing. As then-assistant dean for clinical operations and the founding chief operating officer for RCHC, DiGiulio helped establish the center’s organizational structure and reporting mechanisms, focusing on delivery of high-quality patient care. During her two years in RCHC leadership, she oversaw areas including risk management, ethics and compliance, billing, care contracting, and provider credentialing.

DiGiulio has taught and mentored hundreds of nurse practitioner students since she joined the Rutgers School of Nursing faculty in 2007. She served six years as track coordinator for the Adult Health NP program, and nearly three years as track coordinator for the Adult Gerontology Primary Care program.

A member of the Bergen Volunteer Medical Initiative, DiGiulio is part of an interprofessional team providing free primary and preventive health care to low-income, uninsured residents of Bergen County, NJ. DiGiulio earned her BSN and MSN degrees from Fairleigh Dickinson University. She holds a DNP degree and post-master’s certificate in Adult Gerontology Nurse Practitioner from Rutgers School of Nursing. Her honors and awards include a 2013 Outstanding Faculty Practice Award from the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties.

Focusing not only on diagnosing and managing acute and chronic illnesses, NPs integrate health promotion, disease prevention, counseling and patient education to help patients understand their complete health picture.

Rutgers School of Nursing offers a comprehensive NP education program offering a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree. NP students can specialize in adult-gerontology acute care; adult-gerontology primary care; family; family with emergency care focus; pediatrics; psychiatric/mental health; women’s health; or women’s health-nurse midwifery. For more information, visit nursing.rutgers.edu
