The Assessment and Evaluation of the Adult Sexual Assault Survivor Course - April 2013
This introductory course is designed to provide the professional nurse, nurse practitioner or nurse midwife who wishes to practice as a sexual assault nurse examiner (SANE) or the physician who wishes to refine skills as a SAFE with a comprehensive educational program. The course is taught by a certified nurse practitioner who is also certified as a SANE-A by International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN). Course content includes how to do the assessment, evaluation and treatment of an adult sexual assault survivor. In addition to covering psychosocial aspects of sexual assault, topics will include mechanics and identification of sexual assault injury, forensic concepts, documentation (including photography and colposcope), evidence collection, legal aspects and the role of the provider from initial interventions to courtroom responsibilities. Methods include didactic sessions as well as clinical practice. A Rutgers certificate will be awarded upon successful completion of the program. Selected days are open to social workers, rape crisis personnel, law enforcement, prosecutors and other interested professionals. The course content meets the standards set forth by the IAFN.
