Description
The ability to safely and rationally prescribe medication is a required competency for nurse practitioners (NONPF, 2014). In fact, a prescription for at least one medication is written during 70 percent of all primary care visits in the United States (Cipher, Hooker, & Guerra, 2006). To appropriately write a prescription, a rational, methodical thinking process is required (deVries, et al., 1994). Nurse practitioners must demonstrate knowledge, skill, and judgment (Mucklow, Bollington, & Maxwell, 2012) while navigating a complex healthcare environment.
The purpose of this course is to introduce critical concepts from the World Health Organizations’ Guide to Good Prescribing to nurse practitioner practice. The six-step process described in this book is the most globally utilized (Kamarudin, 2013). Participants will complete three, 20-minute modules to improve their knowledge, skill, and clinical judgment. Upon course completion, participants will have an improved sense of confidence in their ability to prescribe.
Objectives
- Acknowledge challenges, barriers, and risk while prescribing.
- Define rational v irrational prescribing behaviors.
- Articulate the WHO six-step method of prescribing.
- Practice utilization of knowledge, skill, and judgment.
- Determine prescriber confidence before and after this course.
