The School Nurse certificate program is designed to allow students to complement their nursing major program with study in a specialized field-school health nursing. Since the certificate program is designed to enhance the nursing major, a certificate may be awarded only in conjunction with the awarding of a baccalaureate degree in nursing.
Program Requirements:
- Current license as a Registered Professional Nurse in New Jersey
- Matriculation in the RN-BS/MS program at Rutgers College of Nursing
- General Education (45 credits) Forty-five credits in the general education area including at least four of the following: English, mathematics, social sciences, natural sciences and humanities (foreign language, fine and practical arts, philosophy.
Thirty credits from the following areas: mental health, child and/or adolescent growth and development, foundations of education, human and intercultural relations, community/public health nursing, the public school program and school nursing.
Foundational Courses (13 credits)
Equivalent courses earned while obtaining licensure as a registered professional nurse with a BS/BA or BSN degree can be applied to these course requirements.

A minimum of 12 credits must be taken at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, College of Nursing to obtain this certificate, otherwise there is no limit on transferred credits for certification purposes.
Student Teaching
Student teaching will take place in 25:705:481 School Health Nursing Practicum, a one semester course or 25:705:482 and 483, School Health Nurse Practicum I and II, a two semester course. The practicum will consist of 150 hours that can be done in one or two semesters. All practicum hours must under the direct supervision of a certified school nurse.
Entry Requirements
- Matriculated student in the RN to BS/MS program in Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, College of Nursing with a 3.0 grade point average.
- Current license as a registered professional nurse in the State of New Jersey
- Completion of the General Education Requirement that consists of 45 credits chosen in at least four of the following areas: English, mathematics, social sciences, natural sciences and humanities (foreign language, fine and practical arts, philosophy)
- Declaration of a minor with the Office of Student Affairs
- CPR Certification
- A complete health assessment, with required immunizations, as required by the College of Nursing.
Exit Requirements
A cumulative grade point average of 2.75 or higher as required by State regulations.
