The College of Nursing Honors Program is aimed at enhancing the exceptional student’s opportunities in professional nursing, research, and the development of scholarship in nursing. The overall goal of the program is to enhance the development of the individual student’s critical and analytical abilities in problem solving the complex issues, ideas, and scientific data bases in the health care field as it relates to nursing.
Student educational experiences in the Honors Program allow for increased professional growth, personal satisfaction and achievement, and a stimulating academic experience.
Participation in the Honors Program has a variety of advantages for students, future employers and for society. Students in the Honors Program enjoy close interaction with distinguished faculty members, seminars, independent study and off-campus opportunities.
First Year
First year students who are eligible are invited to participate in the Honors Program in the second year.
Second Year
Honor scholars attend selected seminars and research forums each semester.
Third Year
Honors scholars continue to attend the Honors Colloquium for two semesters and selected research seminars/forums congruent with research activities and projects in the College of Nursing. Students select a research advisor and are oriented to a research project.
Fourth Year
During the last year, Honor Scholars register for a two-semester Seniors Honors Project under the mentorship of a faculty member. Students prepare a scientific paper or presentation describing their completed projects during Rutgers “Undergraduate Research Week” which celebrates the outstanding, creative, scholarly and scientific activities of Rutgers undergraduate students. Scholars also register for the Honors section in selected nursing clinical courses.
The students will receive a special Honors Certificate and notation of Honors Scholar on the official transcript.
Selection Criteria
First year students who have strong SAT scores are monitored by the Honors Program advisor for eligibility into the program. After the second semester, first year students with a 3.7 cumulative grade-point average or top 10% of the class are formally invited to participate in the Honors Program in their second year. Sophomore and Junior students’ eligibility are based on a transcript review (3.8 GPA or top 10% of class).
