This introductory course is designed to provide the health professional who wishes to practice as a sexual assault nurse examiner a comprehensive educational program. Course content includes how to do the assessment, evaluation and treatment of a sexual assault victim across the life span. In addition to covering psychosocial aspects of sexual assault, topics will also include mechanics and identification of sexual assault injury, forensic concepts, documentation, evidence collection, legal aspects and the role of the provider from initial interventions to courtroom responsibilities. Methods include didactic/discussion sessions as well as clinical practice experienced with teaching assistants. A Rutgers certificate will be awarded upon successful completion of the program. Select days are open to social workers, rape crisis personnel, law enforcement, prosecutors and other.
