The pediatric sexual assault examiner course is designed for professionals who have responsibility for providing health evaluations for children who are alleged victims of sexual abuse. This educational program is appropriate for registered nurses, physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants. The course content will include pediatric growth and development relative to interviewing and disclosures, utilization of the team approach to child maltreatment, role of the provider in pediatric sexual assault, approach to the examination of the child victim of physical and sexual abuse, identification of injury specific to child physical and sexual abuse and documentation and interpretation of findings. The course also includes review of the legal process in child sexual abuse, evidence collection, providing expert courtroom testimony and advocating for the child victim. An overview of diagnostic dilemmas, treatment modalities for identified injuries, sexually transmitted diseases in children, and examination of recent research in child maltreatment will be included. Use of technology including the colposcope and photography are included in the course as well as a pediatric simulator.
