From March 19–April 16, students must register online for required Commencement Parking Hangtags for themselves and their guests. Visit the Parking Guidelines page.

Info for Graduation Students

Arriving at High Point Solutions Stadium.
Please allow yourself ample travel and parking time. If you’re driving, be sure to bring your parking hangtag and utilize Waze, the free traffic app. Special instructions on the back of the parking hangtag will assist with getting to your exact parking zone.

Plan to arrive to your designated parking area early so that you can take the shuttle bus or walk to High Point Solutions Stadium. Gates open to the stadium at 8am when we will begin the alphabetic scrolling of the names of our graduating students on the stadium-wrapping ribbon boards, which will continue throughout the ceremony. Also, shout out videos will run on the video board and will air in the student marshaling area, so plan to arrive by 9am, the latest.

All students will go through a security screening at the stadium entrance gates. The stadium bag policy will be in effect. Only clear, gallon-size or smaller bags are permitted in the stadium, and purses are limited to the size of a clutch, 4.5”x 6.5”. All outside food and drinks, umbrellas, pets, signs and noisemakers are not permitted. Please refer to the guidelines found online on the site.

Once inside the stadium, look for signs that indicate “Marshaling Area for Graduates and Faculty” and follow them around the concourse to the south end, under the video board. Our Commencement Ambassadors (in red shirts) will be there to direct you or provide special assistance.

Ring the Red Lion Bell
Thanks to a very generous donation through the Rutgers Historical Society, we have a tradition that began at the 2011 University Commencement — the ringing of the Red Lion Bell, which is located just below the video board, on the concourse. Starting with the Class of 2016 our incoming students have rung the bell when they began their studies in August. Now you can ring the bell to signify your departure from the university, before you become one of our newest graduates!

Photo Opportunities
After ringing the Red Lion Bell, proceed down the steps beneath the video board to the ground floor, under the south end zone seating. Professional photographers from GradImages will be available to take commemorate photos. These photos will be included with other photos taken of you by GradImages at our many graduation events. Again, plan to arrive to the marshaling area by 9am to allow for time to ring the bell and take photos.

Prepare for the Procession – in the Marshaling Area, located down the stairs
Proceed to your designated marshaling area located on the ground floor, beneath the south end zone seating, where you will prepare for the procession onto the field. Maps on the wall at the entrances will show you where your school is marshaling and where you will be seated on the field so you can inform your family and friends. This information is also available at where you can download the marshaling and field seating map.

Regalia, Spiritmakers, and Other Important Information

You must wear your academic regalia to participate in the ceremony. Regalia is available at the Barnes & Noble at Rutgers University, 100 Somerset Street, New Brunswick.

Students are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes and comfortable clothing under your regalia to University Commencement. You will be walking on concrete steps and surfaces and onto the field, which will be covered with protective decking. Please check the weather and dress appropriately.

As you move into your particular school’s marshaling area you will be given your spiritmaker. These are to help to designate your school and help people locate your school out on the field. Be sure to wave them when your school is asked to rise. The spiritmaker colors generally match the color of your school.  Please inflate the spiritmaker while you are in the marshaling area. Water and restrooms are available in the marshaling area.

The Academic Procession
A video in the marshaling area will provide a countdown for the start of the procession. Please follow the instructions to walk in an orderly, single file line, with decorum. While this is an exciting day, all graduates should walk in a line so that they can follow their school to the specific seating area assigned for your school.

As you process out of the marshaling area, be sure your friends are marching either in front of you or behind you to be seated together. Commencement Marshals will direct you to your seat on the field where you will be grouped in your academic units. Once at your seat on the field, please be seated until you are asked to rise for The National Anthem

Once at your seat, please take a seat and await the start of the ceremony. For your safety, do not stand on your seat. Also, stay out of the aisles so that others can process to their seats.

After the student speaker delivers the class address, the chancellors will read out the names of each school and the degrees offered at each school. At this time, we ask that all graduates stand as your school is called and remain standing throughout the conferral of the degrees. When the president confers all of the degrees, and tells you to move your tassel, the cannon will fire to signal this special moment at Rutgers. After the cannon fires and the platform party exits the stage, you will be allowed to exit the field via any staircase to join your guests. Graduates from the School of Arts and Sciences should return to the marshaling area to prepare for the start of the School of Arts and Sciences Convocation at 12:30 p.m.

University Commencement will be held rain or shine. There will be plenty of clear rain ponchos available in the marshaling area for graduates, if needed.

Flowers and Class of 2018 T-Shirts
Our flower vendor, Commencement Flowers, will have kiosks at the north and west gates to the stadium where they will be selling flower bouquets and gifts, as well as T-shirts with the names of all 11,000+ graduates in the Class of 2018. Two versions of the T-shirt will be prepared, one with all names of the Rutgers–New Brunswick undergraduates and one for all Rutgers–New Brunswick graduate level and Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences graduates. Please let your family and friends know that these items will be available as they near the stadium, and you may want to surprise someone who helped support you along the way with a keepsake from the day. You can pre-order these at
