Norovirus outbreaks at shelters housing hurricane evacuees

ProMed Digest, September 11, 2005 Norovirus outbreaks at shelters housing evacuees from Hurricane Katrina have been brought under control, although about 700 have been affected. Norovirus can cause vomiting and diarrhea, and is easily spread from person to person. Norovirus outbreaks have been frequent on cruise ships. Control measures include proper hand washing, and isolation of those infected to the extent possible. The outbreak appears to have peaked and fewer cases than expected of gastrointestinal diseases have been seen post – Hurricance Katrina damage.
