Cryptosporidiosis outbreak in NY waterpark

ProMed August 21, 2005 Nearly 1800 people have gastrointestinal illnesses with some cases being confirmed as cryptosporidiosis. The NY Seneca Lake Park Sprayground has been closed. Symptom may include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and fever that can last for weeks. Cryptosporidiosis is caused by the parasite, Cryptosporidium parvum, and is highly contagious. Most healthy people recover without treatment. Prevention includes thorough hand washing after using the toilet, handling or changing diapers, or being in contact with any fecal material, and before any food preparation. Swimmers should avoid swallowing water.
