Progression through the curriculum is based on satisfactory completion of required nursing courses and prerequisite courses. Satisfactory achievement is interpreted by Rutgers as a grade of C or better. A grade of D or F in required courses will not be accepted as meeting the course requirement.
The Scholastic Standing Committee of the the faulty reviews, monitors and takes action on the records of students in academic difficulty each term (fall, winter, spring, summer). Students may be placed on continued probation or dismissed from the College of Nursing.
Probation: Students are placed on academic probation for:
- One failure (D or F) in any upper-division nursing course
- Two grades of D or any combination of D or F in lower-division nursing and/or science courses
- A cumulative or term grade point average less than:
1.70 at the end of the second term
1.90 at the end of the third term
1.95 at the end of the fourth term
2.00 at the end of the fifth term until graduation
While on continued probation, students are required to meet with their academic advisors to develop a course of action to improve their academic standing. Students placed on probation receive a letter explaining the reason for probation. The letter is sent to the home address at the end of the fall and spring terms.
Dismissal: Dismissed students are notified in writing at their home address. Students are ordinarily dismissed for one of the following reasons:
- A cumulative or term grade point average of less than 2.0 at the end of the second term of continued academic probation (terms need not be consecutive).
- A second grade of D or F in the same required prerequisite course or an upper-division nursing course
- Two grades of D or F or a combination of these grades in any two upper-division nursing courses in one term
- Two grades of D or F or a combination of these grades in any two upper-division nursing courses, regardless of whether one course was successfully repeated
- A second withdrawal in the same science or nursing course
Appeals: Students dismissed from the College of Nursing by the Scholastic Standing Committee may appeal, in writing, within ten days of the date of the letter of dismissal. Grounds for appeal include technical error or extenuating circumstances. Students may only present information to the committee in writing. The letter should be written by the student and should contain supporting documents which verify extenuating circumstances. All letters should be sent to:
