Our Heritage

The Rutgers College of Nursing has defined leadership and excellence in nursing education in New Jersey. This heritage of excellence is at the heart of all our degree programs and places Rutgers equal to the most prestigious nursing programs in the nation. Inspired and empowered by the quality of education they receive at the College of Nursing, our graduates are recognized as leaders throughout the profession.

Our rich history dates back more than 50 years to when the Newark campus first offered courses in public health nursing. Many exciting milestones in our development as a teaching and research institution have occurred since then, from the College of Nursing's original accreditation, to the establishment of a Doctor of Philosophy Program in Nursing, which was approved by the New Jersey Board of Higher Education in 1989.

Today, College of Nursing students enjoy the broadest range of academic programs available, including many nurse practitioner clinical specialties, and the first doctoral nursing degree program in New Jersey. We help prepare you for the rewarding career of nursing by providing evidence-based education to teach critical thinking, clinical reasoning, and the technical skills necessary to provide the best health care. Our research-oriented faculty includes 12 fellows of the prestigious American Academy of Nursing far more than any other nursing program in New Jersey. The majority of this full-time faculty, whose skills are grounded in research, have earned doctoral degrees. They bring their knowledge of nursing and passion for the profession to the classroom. New clinical programs that address the health needs of at-risk communities have been developed. Under the direction and vision of our current Dean, Dr. Felissa R. Lashley, who is widely recognized for her pioneering work in genetics and nursing, as well as the fields of HIV/AIDS and emerging infectious diseases, Rutgers College of Nursing programs continue to be on the cutting edge.

All of these factors are reflected in the College's primary mission: to educate students, advance the discipline of nursing through research, provide service that is responsive to the health care needs of the public, and demonstrate local, national and international leadership for the profession.
