This introductory course is designed to provide the professional nurse, nurse practitioner, or nurse midwife who wishes to practice as a sexual assault forensic examiner (SAFE) of the physician who wishes to refine skills with a comprehensive educational program. Course content includes how to do the assessment, evaluation, and treatment of an adult sexual assault injury, forensic concepts, documentation, evidence collection, legal aspect, and the role of the provider from initial intervention to courtroom responsibilities. Methods include didactic sessions as well as clinical practice. Use of technology including the colposcope and photography are included in the course. Selected days are open to social workers, rape crisis personnel, law enforcement, and other interested professionals.
